It's been three years in the making, but fans' patience is finally about to be rewarded - Jack Ryan is returning for a third season on Amazon Prime Video this week.

John Krasinski is back in the title role of Tom Clancy's CIA agent hero, who in season 3 is set to go on the run from his own agency after being wrongly implicated in a conspiracy.

Prepare yourself for more high-octane action in this penultimate season as Wendell Pierce and Michael Kelly also return as James Greer and Mike November respectively.

News that Jack Ryan was ending after its fourth season dropped earlier this year, with reports also suggesting a spin-off series could be in the works with a new character played by Michael Peña.

Jack Ryan season 3 release date

Jack Ryan season 3 will be released on Prime Video on 21st December 2022.

The season will consist of eight episodes and all instalments will be released simultaneously.

The announcement was made on Wednesday 28th September 2022.

Deadline reported that filming concluded last year so fans really don't have long to wait now for the next episode.

John Krasinski (The Office, Some Good News, A Quiet Place Parts 1 and 2) is confirmed to return as the Jack, alongside The Wire’s Wendell Pierce as James Greer, Jack’s boss. Michael Kelly is also set to return as Mike November.

New additions to the cast include Betty Gabriel as Elizabeth Wright, the Chief of Station, as well as James Cosmo, Peter Guinness, Nina Hoss as Alena Kovac and Alexej Manvelov.

Meanwhile, Deadline first reported that Abbie Cornish, who played Jack's girlfriend Cathy Mueller in season 1, but didn't appear in season 2, will show back up in season 4 down the line.

Michael Peña will also join the cast for season 4. His character is not yet confirmed but Deadline is reporting that he will play Domingo 'Ding' Chavez, who could go on to lead his own spin-off.

Jack Ryan season 3 plot

In season 3, Jack is said to be on the run and in a race against time. He is wrongly implicated in a larger conspiracy and suddenly finds himself a fugitive out in the cold. Now, wanted by both the CIA and an international rogue faction that he has uncovered, Jack is forced underground, crisscrossing Europe, trying to stay alive and prevent a massive global conflict.

The official synopsis for the season reads: "Season 3 of the action-thriller series finds Jack Ryan on the run and in a race against time. Jack is wrongly implicated in a larger conspiracy and suddenly finds himself a fugitive out in the cold.

"Now, wanted by both the CIA and an international rogue faction that he has uncovered, Jack is forced underground, crisscrossing Europe, trying to stay alive, while preventing a massive global conflict."

Season 2 saw Jack almost drowned in a bathtub, so we imagine season 3 will see the agent continuing to get himself into dangerous situations - followed, of course, by narrow escapes.

However, don't expect Jack Ryan to become (major Tom Clancy books spoiler!) the US President anytime soon.

"In the Clancy books, he goes from being an analyst in 'Hunt for Red October' to becoming the president of the United States," showrunner Carlton Cuse previously told IndieWire. "And it felt like the sweet spot was in that moment where he goes from being an analyst to being an operative in the field for the first time.

"That was the part that seemed the most traumatic and compelling. In our version, it's kind of a prequel to everything that's gone on. He's only worked in the CIA for four years, which is less than in the books."
